WASHINGTON D.C. – Fincantieri Marine Group is partnering with BMT, a leading naval architecture and marine engineering design group, as they assist the U.S. Navy in their effort to design and build a cable ship replacement.
The Navy’s only operational cable ship, USNS Zeus, is at the end of its long service life, and the Navy is interested in recapitalizing its undersea cable installation and repair capabilities, as well as adding the new mission sets of acoustic, hydrographic, and bathymetric survey; and deploying and recovering unmanned underwater vessels.
BMT was recently awarded the prime contract to conduct industry studies for the T-ARC(X) cable ship replacement program, and Fincantieri Marine Group will support BMT as a major partner.
“We are pleased to be part of this tremendous industry team led by BMT on this important program,” said Mark Vandroff, Fincantieri Marine Group’s Senior Vice President of Business Development. “We believe our team will ultimately provide the Navy with a sustainable and capable ship to perform this critical mission.”

This week, Fincantieri Marinette Marine recognized Mayor Steve Genisot by presenting him an official shovel and hard hat from the Ground Breaking of Building 34 that recently took place at the shipyard. Mayor Genisot participated in the outdoor event in February, but due to extreme cold weather, the company postponed a few of the special recognition portions of the event.
“Building 34 will become the crown jewel of our shipyard, and the recent ground breaking marked a significant milestone in the history of our shipyard,” said Jan Allman, CEO of Fincantieri Marinette Marine. “Mayor Genisot has been a strong partner to FMM. I’m really honored to recognize him today for his steadfast collaboration throughout our entire growth process. Under his leadership, the City has been a true partner in helping us navigate our growth and expansion plans.”
The multi-million dollar building is part of the company’s most recent $200 million shipyard capital expansion underway in Wisconsin. In addition to this building, there are several other projects in Marinette. The largest ship lift in the U.S. is being built along the waterfront, as well as improvements to other buildings to facilitate upcoming frigate fabrication for the U.S. Navy and a significant increase in employment.
“I value the partnership we have with FMM, our area’s largest employer,” said Mayor Steve Genisot. “They are making a significant investment in the community, creating numerous jobs and bringing economic growth to the entire region.”
Building 34 is a key element to constructing the Constellation-class frigate, and will support construction of two 500-ft. ships at the same time inside of an impressive climate-controlled facility.
Background
Fincantieri Marinette Marine was awarded the contract in April 2020, to design and build the first Constellation-class guided missile frigate, with options for nine additional ships. The total value of the contract, if all options are exercised by the Navy is $5.5 Billion.
The growing Marinette shipyard employs thousands of full-time workers and related contractors who produce Navy ships, like the Littoral Combat Ship and the newest guided-missile frigate.

WASHINGTON D.C. – As detail design work continues on the Navy’s newest class of ships, officials announced that L3Harris has joined the team to provide integrated systems for the Navy’s Constellation-class frigates.
“We are glad to have L3Harris, specifically its innovative Integrated Mission Systems team, with us as together we build tomorrow’s Navy,” said Fincantieri Marine Group President and CEO Dario Deste.
In a release earlier this week, L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) announced it is on contract with Fincantieri Marinette Marine for the shipboard integration and production of major subsystems onboard the U.S. Navy’s guided-missile frigate FFG 62. L3Harris is prepared to support the Navy’s plans to build at least 10 ships. The value of the L3Harris program could exceed $300 million if all design, development, and production options are awarded.
L3Harris is the largest member of the Fincantieri FFG team and will provide integrated systems that include the electric and propulsion systems, bridge and navigation systems, and aviation integration services. The diversified capabilities that L3Harris delivers on the Constellation-class Frigate program will distribute the power and propulsion needed to meet the U.S. Navy’s mission requirements throughout the world.
“We’re excited by the opportunity to join the Fincantieri Marinette Marine team on the Frigate program and we look forward to bringing to bear industry-best speed, innovation and affordability as we deliver the advanced integrated capabilities that will ensure the Navy’s ability to operate this ship with impunity upon any sea,” said Sean Stackley, President, Integrated Mission Systems, L3Harris.
The Navy awarded Fincantieri Marinette Marine the contract to design and build the FFG, the Navy’s first new build in more than a decade. L3Harris will support Fincantieri at its Marinette, Wisc. shipyard, where it will build the frigate based on the company’s Italian FREMM multi-mission frigate.
L3Harris joins FFM’s other partners: GE Marine, Philly Gear, and Thrustmaster on this important naval program.

MARINETTE, WISCONSIN – As Fincantieri Marinette Marine prepares to start construction of the Navy’s newest class of ships, several key leaders were in Marinette today to mark the occasion of the largest building in Marinette Marine history.
“Building 34 is a key element to our Constellation-class frigate production,” said Dario Deste, President and CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group. “This will allow us to complete construction of two 500-ft. ships at the same time inside of a massive climate-controlled facility.”
Navy.
Across the bay at Marinette’s sister shipyard, Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, construction began on several new buildings months ago and is progressing rapidly. These buildings are where large portions of the frigate’s hull will be constructed, then shipped to Marinette where they will be joined together inside of Building 34 as the ships are erected.
“We are increasing the capabilities and capacity of our system-of-shipyards here in Wisconsin to support the U.S. Navy and future customers,” Deste added. “
Local Groundbreaking
Although they preferred to have an all-hands groundbreaking with the entire shipyard and local community, the leaders agreed that during the COVID pandemic they would need to keep the event small.
“Locally we wanted to celebrate our continued progress with a relatively small, socially-distanced ceremony,” said Jan Allman, Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s CEO. “We have a great shipyard, filled with tremendous men and women, supported by leaders who understand that tomorrow’s Navy and our regional economy will be positively impacted by the important work here in Marinette for decades to come.”
“We are improving our facilities, but also adding to our workforce, with engineers, project managers, and nearly every skilled trade,” said Deste. “We are increasing our technical training pipeline, with solid partners like Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.”
Today’s groundbreaking attendees included representatives from FMM, FMG, the U.S. Navy, the Wisconsin-based construction and engineering companies, Miron and Graef, who are building the structure, as well as union leadership of the Boilermakers 696.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Fincantieri Marinette Marine will partner with GE Marine to provide gas turbine engines and associated equipment on the Navy’s Constellation-class frigates being designed and built in Wisconsin.
“GE Marine brings a proven and reliable gas turbine that integrates perfectly in our combined diesel electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion system,” said Dario Deste, President and CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group. “Fincantieri has a decades-long relationship with GE, and we are proud to have these American-made gas engines on our U.S. Navy frigates.”
The GE gas turbine, LM2500+G4, has been in operation on Italian frigates built by Fincantieri for nearly a decade, but this will be the first U.S. Navy ship to utilize this particular gas turbine.
According to Kris Shepherd, Vice President, General Manager, GE Marine, “The FFG 62 marks the initial U.S. Navy use of the LM2500+G4 engine. To date, 37 LM2500+G4 gas turbines have been chosen for surface combatants and two for commercial marine ships, as well as more than 1,100 of these engines operating worldwide in industrial settings. The U.S. Navy will benefit from Fincantieri’s low-risk, proven ship design powered by GE’s reliable LM2500+G4 gas turbine.”
For Deste, it was important that the engines be made in the United States.
“We are making an American ship, so we want the best U.S. parts, components and systems available in these vitally important ships,” said Deste. “We are part of a global enterprise focused on designing, building and maintaining reliable and innovative ships. We have tremendous partners and suppliers who are with us for the lead ship and the many additional ships that we believe will follow.”
Fincantieri Marinette Marine was awarded the contract in April 2020 for the first-in-class FFG 62, the future USS Constellation. The initial $795 million contract with the Navy also has options for nine follow-on frigates, including the recently named USS Congress which will be the second Constellation class frigate. The total value of the initial contract and subsequent options is valued at approximately $5.5 billion for 10 ships.
The LM2500+G4 gas turbine for the new class of frigate is certified to a U.S. Navy rating of 30.3 MW (U.S. Navy standard day). GE will ensure the gas turbine and all associated auxiliary equipment is to specification and fully integrated with the propulsion plant.
The LM2500+G4 will be supplied in GE’s state-of-the-art composite gas turbine module. One of the most important design features of this new module is that it provides a safer environment and improved access for sailors. By using lightweight composites versus the steel enclosure predecessor, wall temperatures are 25oF to 50oF degrees cooler so there is less heat rejected into the engine room. GE also offers water mist fire suppression capability to the composite enclosure.
The LM2500+G4 engine will be made in the U.S.A. at GE’s manufacturing facility in Evendale, Ohio.

Marinette, Wisconsin – Ambassador Robert O’Brien, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, visited Fincantieri Marinette Marine Shipyard Monday to tour the facility, speak with shipbuilders and receive briefings from shipyard leadership.
O’Brien’s trip is part of a concerted effort to underscore the importance of the industry’s private shipyards in building and maintaining the fleet that our nation needs in an era of great power competition.
O’Brien spoke with Fincantieri management about the Littoral Combat Ship and Constellation-class Frigate programs and the shipyard’s efforts to expand in order to accommodate the Frigate platform. Fincantieri’s production is essential to meeting the 355-ship Navy goal.
“It is more important than ever that American shipyard capabilities be maintained and expanded,” said O’Brien. “We are a maritime nation, and the future of our freedom and the world’s freedom depends on lethal, ready, and present naval forces.”
This marks the fourth visit to Marinette by the Administration in the previous 12 months. President Trump and Vice President Pence both visited the shipyard, toured the facilities and met with the workforce.
“Fincantieri appreciates the opportunity to show Ambassador O’Brien our shipyard and the high caliber of work being done by the hard-working men and women of Wisconsin,” said Fincantieri Marinette Marine Shipyard President Richard Hunt. “We believe in the work we do here. We believe our work keeps our Navy strong and our country safe.”
The Navy awarded a $795-million contract to Fincantieri to begin building the Constellation-class frigates in April, the first new major shipbuilding program the Navy started in more than a decade.
FFG 62 will bring with it the evolution of the Navy’s Small Surface Combatant with increased lethality, survivability, and improved capability to support the National Defense Strategy across the full range of military operations.
